Summary

The gruff and surly Mr Thomas Oakley is less than pleased when he is landed with a scrawny little city boy as a guest, but because it is compulsory that each villager takes in an evacuee he reluctantly agrees。 It soon becomes obvious to Mister Tom that young Willie Beech is hiding something, and as the pair begin to form an unlikely bond and Willie grows in stature and in confidence he begins to forget the past。 But when he has to return to war-torn London to face his mother again he retreats into his shy and awkward ways once more。

Goodnight Mister Tom is one of the most touching and powerful stories ever written。 As the relationship between Willie and Tom begins to transform them both, Magorian's powerful yet gentle writing tugs at the heart, taking the reader on an incredibly emotional journey that never once stoops to unnecessary sentimentality。 --Susan Harrison

This story stuck with my throughout my childhood。 While the war caused devastion for so many in this book, a silver lining ended up with it having saved Williams life。 The story of family found between Mr Tom and William is unlike any other I've read before。 Would recommend to anyone。 This story stuck with my throughout my childhood。 While the war caused devastion for so many in this book, a silver lining ended up with it having saved Williams life。 The story of family found between Mr Tom and William is unlike any other I've read before。 Would recommend to anyone。 。。。more

Jag blev plötsligt påmind om denna bok och hur berörd jag blev av den som 11-åring。 Som vuxen har jag svårt att förstå att den klassas som barnbok, grov psykisk och fysisk barnmisshandel??!

This was SUCH a sweet story。 I cannot remember another book that (literally) made me cry。 The story is predictable, but rather than being disappointed by that, it was very satisfying。 Absolutely wonderful! I'm going to buy it right now 'cause I know I'm going to want to read it again - and I'm not one who re-reads many books。 This was SUCH a sweet story。 I cannot remember another book that (literally) made me cry。 The story is predictable, but rather than being disappointed by that, it was very satisfying。 Absolutely wonderful! I've read it several times already as an adult and even if it's for children, its themes of child abuse, war and unexpected love resonate deeply within me each time。 I've read it several times already as an adult and even if it's for children, its themes of child abuse, war and unexpected love resonate deeply within me each time。 。。。more

This children's novel about a boy evacuated from London to the country in World War II had been sitting around in my basement for years。 I picked it up at the beginning of lock down, thinking that it might be suitable for a time of great uncertainty and change in way of life。 The story is overall heartwarming, but the dark parts were really dark。 It surprised me for a children's book。 This children's novel about a boy evacuated from London to the country in World War II had been sitting around in my basement for years。 I picked it up at the beginning of lock down, thinking that it might be suitable for a time of great uncertainty and change in way of life。 The story is overall heartwarming, but the dark parts were really dark。 It surprised me for a children's book。 。。。more

I've been sharing this wonderful book with my best friend throughout Lockdown and it has been just lovely。 Such a beautiful gentle story set in WWII which draws on so many important themes, detailing and addressing them vividly but sensitively。 Sweet humour is mixed with sadness and struggle; and I loved revisiting Little Weirwold after all these years。 I've been sharing this wonderful book with my best friend throughout Lockdown and it has been just lovely。 Such a beautiful gentle story set in WWII which draws on so many important themes, detailing and addressing them vividly but sensitively。 Sweet humour is mixed with sadness and struggle; and I loved revisiting Little Weirwold after all these years。 。。。more

Read out loud and as a story of trauma, this one has some eye popping moments。 Rough。

Such a warm hearted story! Surprisingly, I did not even know this children’s classic existed!

I loved this book! Although it is billed as children’s fiction, I enjoyed it as an adult。 A lovely story and well defined characters。

I bought this copy years ago at Blackwell's in Oxford and read it for the first time this year。 It's a very moving story, both tender and dramatic, but I wondered if the mother was a bit too evil to believe? That's a small quibble in an otherwise wonderful reading experience。 Would love to see the film with John Thaw。 I bought this copy years ago at Blackwell's in Oxford and read it for the first time this year。 It's a very moving story, both tender and dramatic, but I wondered if the mother was a bit too evil to believe? A heart warming story of friendship, love and adapting to life in both the warmest and bleakest of times。 Despite being child fiction, the novel, in particular William’s unfolding character, is still pleasant to follow and his intelligence, determination and admirable naivety is touching。 It left me with a sense of gratitude and emotional fulfilment。

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book! This was an incredibly moving and engaging story about William, a young boy who is evacuated from London to a small rural village and lives with Mister Tom。 It is obvious from the very beginning that life at home in London was not at all pleasant for Will, and as he gets to know Tom and his new home, he begins to thrive。 This will definitely pull at your heart strings - there was a certain part of the novel where I couldn’t stop the tears from I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book! This was an incredibly moving and engaging story about William, a young boy who is evacuated from London to a small rural village and lives with Mister Tom。 It is obvious from the very beginning that life at home in London was not at all pleasant for Will, and as he gets to know Tom and his new home, he begins to thrive。 This will definitely pull at your heart strings - there was a certain part of the novel where I couldn’t stop the tears from spilling down my face。 It takes a lot for me to cry at a book, so this is testament to the emotional impact this book had and the author’s way of telling the story。A book that you won’t want to put down, and one that will become a new children’s favourite。 It certainly has become one of mine。 。。。more

I simply adore this book and all the characters。The father/son relationship that grows between Tom and Will is so beautiful and well done。I don't know how many times I've read this book, but I never get tired of it。 I get the same feeling when reading this as I do when watching the Anne of Green Gables tv series with Megan Follows。 If you like that show too then I highly recommend this。 I simply adore this book and all the characters。The father/son relationship that grows between Tom and Will is so beautiful and well done。I don't know how many times I've read this book, but I never get tired of it。 I get the same feeling when reading this as I do when watching the Anne of Green Gables tv series with Megan Follows。 If you like that show too then I highly recommend this。 。。。more

Round up to 4。5。 An endearing YA book about a young boy evacuated from an abusive mother in London to the English countryside during the Second World War。 The evolving relationship between Tom and Willy was especially heartwarming。 This was an incredibly powerful read about family, friendships, loss and love and how that love can make a huge difference in someone's life。 Round up to 4。5。 An endearing YA book about a young boy evacuated from an abusive mother in London to the English countryside during the Second World War。 The evolving relationship between Tom and Willy was especially heartwarming。 This was an incredibly powerful read about family, friendships, loss and love and how that love can make a huge difference in someone's life。 。。。more

A wonderful book! It took a while to get used to the way Michelle Magorian writes the characters accents but after that I was totally emerged in the story。 Even though I wouldn't say that I can relate to Williams struggles and experiences, I've never felt more emotionally connected with a character。 I could feel every joy, every sorrow and every bit of emotion in him。 Just seeing his growth throughout the story was very satisfying。 It deals with some heavy topics and some scenes are quite graphi A wonderful book! This was such a beautiful story! William was such a sweet boy and following his journey left me in tears of happiness & heartbreak。 I absolutely fell in love with Tom, every child deserves a Tom。 I just adored Zach's character! We were forced to endure the torture of this graphic tale of horrific child abuse and never-ending tragedy as part of required reading in 7th grade。 My twin reminded me today of this novel read when we were 12 and it all came flooding back to me like the childhood trauma it is—24 years later and the very thought of this poorly written, disturbing tale turns my stomach and fills me with rage: WHAT WAS WRONF WITH THIS WOMAN WHO WROTE THIS NIGHTMARE FUEL and HOW IN THE WORLD IS THIS CATEGORIZED AS We were forced to endure the torture of this graphic tale of horrific child abuse and never-ending tragedy as part of required reading in 7th grade。 My twin reminded me today of this novel read when we were 12 and it all came flooding back to me like the childhood trauma it is—24 years later and the very thought of this poorly written, disturbing tale turns my stomach and fills me with rage: WHAT WAS WRONF WITH THIS WOMAN WHO WROTE THIS NIGHTMARE FUEL and HOW IN THE WORLD IS THIS CATEGORIZED AS A CHILDREN'S NOVEL?! okay, so i read this in like year 6 or so for tution, and has extremely fond memories of it, and i had this urge to read it but I was terrified it wouldn't live up to the hype i built for it。 turns out, it held up。 I loved it。 It was just so much more wholesome and up-lifting than i remembered。 The first time I read it, most of the happenings regarding WWII went straight over my head, so upon rereading it, the WWII developments added this extra level of tension that really gripped me。 Everytime okay, so i read this in like year 6 or so for tution, and has extremely fond memories of it, and i had this urge to read it but I was terrified it wouldn't live up to the hype i built for it。 turns out, it held up。 I loved it。 It was just so much more wholesome and up-lifting than i remembered。 The first time I read it, most of the happenings regarding WWII went straight over my head, so upon rereading it, the WWII developments added this extra level of tension that really gripped me。 Everytime there were a few chapters in a row that was pure joy I just knew something tragic was coming。 Overall, an extremely moving read, very easy to get through (it is a childrens book afterall ahahah), would recommend! 。。。more

I just reread this book with my fifth grade daughter and I love it so much。 The historical setting is fascinating, the themes are raw and real, and yet there is a sweetness to it that can only be achieved after true sorrow。 There are some mature topics that are good for discussion with older elementary/middle school kids。 This is one of my all time favorites。
